Ferndale Commercial Market Overview

Ferndale’s commercial real estate selection is plentiful, both near downtown and on the outer edges of town. Permitting for a new building often moves faster here than in nearby cities like Bellingham or Blaine.

Near I-5 at Slater Road and East Axton Road, south of Ferndale’s city center, you will find a strong selection of larger and newer commercial retail buildings that take advantage of freeway visibility. These buildings are often large enough for storage and large-scale retail operations.

Warehouse and Industrial

For larger manufacturing operations, look west of LaBounty Road, where you will find bigger warehouse-type facilities, some with a small storefront attached. About Ferndale

Ferndale, Washington was founded in the mid-1800s and was first called Jam because of a big jam of logs that clogged the river. The town has grown from its humble beginnings, and its history and heritage live on in this community.

Ferndale is a true economic hub in Whatcom County. Famous for its Pioneer Days festival, it has the feel of main street America, with Main Street downtown at its heart. It enjoys views of Lummi Island to the west and Mount Baker to the east. Tennant Lake, Hovander Park and the Nooksack River make the town a favorite for holiday events and outdoor recreation.

Originally a timber-based economy, Ferndale is now home to major industry near Cherry Point, including the Phillips 66 refinery, along with the BNSF rail line. Many people who work in Bellingham choose to live in Ferndale, just up I-5.

Ferndale’s location on the river also gives it unique ecological features, which Whatcom County Parks has opened to the public at the Tennant Lake Interpretive Center, the Fragrance Garden and the Lake Terrell Wildlife Refuge.

Parks

Hovander Homestead Park and Pioneer Park are two great examples of the rural homesteading and farm life of the Mt. Baker region. Hovander Homestead Park is a turn of the century farm county park, with a Victorian home listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The park hosts the Antique Farm Fair and a Civil War Reenactment each summer.

A short stroll away is the Tennant Lake Interpretive Center, a sprawling facility that interprets the marsh and lakeside wildlife of the region. Don’t miss the fragrance garden, a raised garden filled with aromatic herbs and plants with wheelchair access and Braille for visitors with low vision. A sturdy boardwalk takes visitors through the marshlands and around Tennant Lake, with interpretive stations to identify the plants and wildlife.

Near downtown is Pioneer Park. This wooded setting is home to one of the finest collections of original pioneer log cabins in the Northwest. These eleven log cabins were built by the early pioneers of the region and once stood alone in the early forests and rough clearings. They were moved to Ferndale from various locations to preserve them at this site next to the Nooksack River.

The public may view and tour these historic buildings in a village setting. The cabins are over 100 years old and vividly show the strength and determination of the pioneer settlers who carved a new life in the West.

Old Settlers Picnic

Since 1897, Pioneer Park has hosted the Old Settlers Picnic each July. This down-home festival celebrates the past with parades, a carnival, performances and hearty food. The park also hosts an Old Fashioned Christmas celebration during the first week in December, when the cabins are decorated to show how early pioneers celebrated the holiday.
