Bellingham Public And Private Schools

April 1, 2026 by Jolene

What Are the Best School Options in Bellingham, WA?

If you are moving to Bellingham and schools matter, here is the real answer.

There are solid public school options.
There are a range of private schools.
And where you live will shape your experience more than anything else.

I have had three kids go through schools in Bellingham, with one still in it now. I have seen how it works from the inside, not just on paper.

Bellingham does not feel like one big area. It changes from neighborhood to neighborhood, and that carries over into schools and daily life. That is what most people do not realize at first.

If you are relocating from out of the area, this is usually the biggest adjustment.
It is less about finding the “best” school and more about finding the right fit.

Bellingham Schools at a Glance

Most students in Bellingham attend public schools through the Bellingham Public Schools district.

There are also a variety of private school options, including Montessori, Waldorf, faith based, and smaller alternative programs.

For most families moving here, the decision is less about rankings and more about how the school fits into everyday life.

Public Schools in Bellingham

Most families land in the public school system, and for many, it works well.

The Bellingham Public Schools district serves neighborhoods across the city, from older areas near downtown to newer communities on the north side.

The district includes multiple elementary schools, four middle schools, and four high schools, so where you live naturally shapes where your kids go.

You will hear about the Bellingham Promise if you talk to local parents. It reflects the district’s goal of focusing on the whole student, not just test scores.

In practice, the experience can vary.

Some schools feel well connected, with strong teachers and active parent involvement.
Others simply feel different depending on class size, resources, and overall environment.

It is not overly rigid. It is not high pressure.
For many families, that balance works.

At the same time, like most areas, things are evolving. What you experience often depends on the specific school, the teachers, and how involved you are as a parent.

Some of the best opportunities are there, but they are not always obvious.

One of my children went through Running Start and into a marine technology program in Skagit. It was a great path, but it took effort on my end to find it and make it happen.

I have watched my own kids move through these schools, and what stands out most is how different each experience can feel depending on the school and the child.

Private Schools in Bellingham

Bellingham also has more private school options than people expect for a city this size.

And they are not all the same.

You will find Montessori programs, Waldorf education, faith based schools, and smaller alternative academies.

Schools like Explorations Academy and Whatcom Hills Waldorf School tend to attract families who want something different.

Smaller class sizes.
Different teaching styles.
More flexibility.

For some families, this is one of the reasons they choose Bellingham.

Public or Private

There is no single right answer.

It comes down to fit.

Public schools here are not all the same. The experience can shift depending on the school and the area.

Private schools tend to be smaller, with more defined structure and teaching approach.

That is usually what shapes the decision, along with what makes sense financially for each family.

What Most People Don’t Realize

This is where everything connects.

Schools in Bellingham are closely tied to neighborhoods, and that shapes more than people expect.

Where you buy influences your school path, your routine, and your overall experience.

School boundaries can change the feel of an area more than price point or home style.

Final Thoughts

Bellingham offers a range of solid options.

Public schools work well for many families, especially when the right fit is there.
Private schools offer flexibility and variety.

The key is not just picking a school.

It is choosing the right area so everything works together.
