Commuting from Skagit County to Seattle

November 11, 2025 by Jolene

Start your search on the Skagit County Homes for Sale page to see homes close to I-5, Park & Ride lots, and transit hubs.
For many Seattle workers, Skagit County is where space and value meet possibility – a place to live bigger and still reach the city.

Your Route to Seattle

Commuting south : drive, ride, or catch the train.
Seattle sits about 65 miles away, with most of the route following I-5.
From Mount Vernon, the trip averages 75 to 90 minutes depending on time of day.
Morning backups usually start near Marysville or Everett, not inside Skagit County.

Driving

Driving gives the most flexibility.
Leave when you want, stop when you want, and take in mountain and water views on the way.
I-5 offers direct freeway access from Burlington, Mount Vernon, and Sedro-Woolley.
Commuters heading to Everett often make it in 40 to 45 minutes.

Park & Ride + Express Bus Options

For those who prefer not to drive daily, Skagit Transit’s 90X Express Bus connects Mount Vernon and Burlington to Everett Station.
From there, riders can transfer to Sound Transit’s Express 510 to reach downtown Seattle.
Park & Ride locations in Mount Vernon, Burlington, and Stanwood make it easy to join the route.

Train Tracks in Burlington

Train from Mount Vernon

The Amtrak Cascades line stops at Skagit Station in Mount Vernon, offering a direct ride to Seattle’s King Street Station.
Trip time averages 1 hour and 30 minutes – no traffic, no stress.
Trains run a few times per day and are a popular backup for hybrid commuters who split their week between city and home.

Other Commuter Options

  • Rideshare: Skagit Transit offers long-distance carpool and vanpool programs.

  • Airporter Shuttle: Runs along I-5, connecting Mount Vernon to Sea-Tac Airport and downtown Seattle.

  • Greyhound: Regular service between Seattle and Mount Vernon, roughly 1 hour 30 minutes each way.

Why Many Seattle Workers Choose Skagit

Home prices in Skagit County remain 30–40% lower than in King or Snohomish County.
That makes the trade-off clear – longer drive, lower mortgage, better quality of life.
Many buyers work hybrid or remote, making the occasional city trip completely manageable.

Best Areas for Commuters

Mount Vernon – Closest to the freeway, direct southbound access.
Burlington – Central hub with easy I-5 entry and Park & Ride.

Each offers its own pace, price range, and scenery.

Tips for a Smooth Commute

  • Check Skagit Transit for updated schedules and Park & Ride options.
